Architecture Foundation to showcase Hirata’s work

JAPANESE architect Akihisa Hirata will stage his first ever solo show at the Architecture Foundation in SE1 curated by Naomi Shibata and The Architecture Foundation, which opens on September 15, the first day of the London Design Festival.

The emerging Japanese architect will create Tangling, a site specific immersive 1:1 scale installation, which take the form of a contorted loop to distil his architecture’s essence into a large-scale experiential structure.

Over a 100 study models and conceptual sketches will be presented on and within the structure, as well as films of his projects to illustrate Hirata’s view of architecture and ecology, form and function, as a complex, interwoven ‘tangle’.

Realising commercial buildings, housing, and individual homes in Japan, Hirata’s accolades include the SD Review Asakura Award (2004), Japan Institute of Architects New Face Award (2008) and ELLE DECO Young Japanese Design Talent (2009). His publications include, INAX Contemporary Architect Concept Series 8: Akihisa Hirata – Tangling (2011). In 2011 Hirata placed second in the Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural & Popular Music Center International Competition, and created the celebrated ‘Bloomberg Pavilion’ for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Hirata has exhibited at Art Basel, Taka Ishii Gallery (Tokyo), Milano Salone and the Yokohama Triennale, and was recently selected to exhibit within the Japanese Pavilion at the 13th Venice Biennale (Autumn 2012).
